Sometimes, what we see on the surface is only the beginning of a much bigger conversation.
Think about a tree for a moment.
When its leaves begin to turn yellow, dry out, or lose their vibrancy, we naturally notice what's happening on the outside. But if we want to understand why, we have to look a little deeper.
Is the tree getting enough sunlight? What about water? Is the soil nourishing its roots? Has something changed in its environment?
We wouldn't expect the leaves to flourish without paying attention to what supports the entire tree.
I've come to believe that our well-being deserves that same curiosity.
What the Skin Taught Me
For over 26 years, I've worked in the beauty and wellness industry, and my journey began with the skin.
Having struggled with my own skin growing up, I understood how deeply something happening on the outside could affect how we felt on the inside.
Over the years, I helped people navigate acne, sensitivity, premature aging, and many other skin concerns.
But the longer I worked with people, the more curious I became.
Why could two people experience similar skin concerns yet respond so differently? Why would certain issues keep returning? And why did things like stress, sleep, nutrition, and lifestyle seem to play such an important role?
I began realizing that the skin wasn't separate from the rest of the person.
It was connected to everything else.
And that curiosity eventually led me beyond skincare and into holistic health, nutrition, the nervous system, energy, and consciousness.
What started with the skin eventually led me to explore the soul.
My Own Journey Inward
But my curiosity didn't come from my professional experiences alone.
There was a time in my own life when I found myself going through some very difficult personal experiences. I began questioning so many things about life, healing, and even who I was.
I had spent years helping others feel better, yet I was beginning to realize how much of my own inner world I hadn't explored.
That period of my life led me down a completely different path.
I started reading about consciousness, our belief systems, and the nature of our reality. Discovering the work of Dolores Cannon opened a door I never expected. It eventually led me to study quantum healing hypnosis and explore the connection between our subconscious mind, emotions, and life experiences.
And the more I learned, the more I wanted to understand.
I continued expanding my education in holistic health and natural medicine, while also exploring spiritual practices that encouraged deeper self-awareness.
Today, my work looks very different from where it began.
I still love helping people care for their skin and physical well-being, but I'm equally passionate about helping them explore themselves on a deeper level.
I didn't leave my earlier work behind. I simply began seeing the bigger picture.
Looking Beyond the Surface
Our bodies are incredibly complex. What we experience physically can be influenced by many interconnected factors, including nutrition, hormones, sleep, stress, genetics, environment, and underlying medical conditions.
Sometimes the explanation is straightforward. Other times, several things may be happening at once.
And while addressing a symptom can be absolutely necessary, I believe there's also value in asking what else might be contributing to the bigger picture.
For example, we know that ongoing stress can affect sleep, digestion, immune function, and the way our bodies respond to everyday challenges.
Our emotional lives and physical bodies are not operating in separate rooms.
They're constantly communicating.
That doesn't mean every physical symptom is emotional or that positive thinking can replace medical treatment. It simply means that supporting our well-being often involves more than looking at one isolated part.
Where Science and Spirit Meet
This is where my personal and professional journey became even more interesting.
As I continued studying holistic health and exploring consciousness, I became fascinated by the relationship between our thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and experiences.
Science gives us valuable ways to understand the nervous system, stress responses, and the body's interconnected systems.
Spiritual exploration invites another kind of curiosity.
What beliefs have I carried for years? What patterns keep showing up in my life? Am I living in alignment with who I truly am, or simply moving through the routines and expectations I've accumulated along the way?
These are different kinds of questions, and I believe both can have a meaningful place in our journey toward greater self-awareness.
For me, healing isn't just about trying to fix something.
It's also about learning to listen, becoming more aware, and creating space for change.
What If We Started Asking Different Questions?
We're so accustomed to asking, "How do I make this go away?"
And sometimes that's exactly the question we need to ask.
But what if we also became curious about the bigger picture?
What has my life felt like lately?
Am I getting enough rest and nourishment?
Have I been giving myself space to process my emotions?
What patterns keep repeating, and what might I learn from them?
What would supporting myself look like if I approached my body with compassion rather than frustration?
These questions aren't about blaming ourselves for what we're experiencing.
They're about developing a deeper relationship with ourselves.
And sometimes, a little awareness can be the beginning of a meaningful shift.
Nourishing the Whole Tree
I often remind myself that wellness isn't about having the perfect routine, eating perfectly, or doing every healing modality available.
It's about finding balance.
Sometimes that means nourishing your body with better food. Sometimes it means getting more sleep, making an appointment with a healthcare professional, moving your body, or simply allowing yourself to slow down.
Other times, it may involve exploring old beliefs, reconnecting with your inner wisdom, or giving yourself permission to make changes you've been avoiding.
There isn't one universal path.
Just as every tree grows in its own environment, every person has a unique history, body, and journey.
And that deserves respect.
A Final Reflection
The next time something feels out of balance, perhaps you can approach it with a little curiosity.
Not fear. Not judgment. Not the pressure to immediately figure everything out.
Just curiosity.
Because sometimes the leaves are telling us something important.
And sometimes understanding the roots helps us see the whole picture a little differently.
Healing begins with awareness. And awareness begins with curiosity.
With love,
Josie
