Supporting Autistic Students to Thrive

Autistic students’ outcomes are shaped not only by support plans and adjustments, but by how children understand themselves.

Many autistic students:
  • Received a diagnosis, but no structured support to understand it
  • Internalise deficit-based messages about autism
  • Experience shame, confusion, anxiety, or low self-esteem
  • Mask their needs, increasing stress and burnout
  • Struggle to explain what helps them — even when adults want to support them
These challenges directly affect:
  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Behavior and stress levels
  • Engagement with learning
  • Attendance
  • Relationships with staff and peers
Yet schools are rarely given practical, developmentally appropriate tools to address this gap.

What Is NeuroBears?

NeuroBears is an autistic-led, evidence-informed psychoeducation program for autistic children aged approximately 8–14.

It supports students to:
  • Understand their autistic brain in a neutral, non-pathologising way
  • Recognise their strengths, needs, and differences
  • Develop language to explain what helps them
  • Feel safer being themselves
  • Build early self-advocacy skills
NeuroBears is not a behavior program and does not aim to change autistic traits. Instead, it supports pupils to understand themselves as a foundation for meaningful inclusion.
