Hi everyone! I hope you like the new look of the website! I have been working like a crazy woman updating and making everything function properly. Let’s just dive into it, then. While looking for something new to watch on Netflix the other night, I came across a period drama called When Calls The Heart. And I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there was a second marriage connection.
Set in the early 1900’s, the show features an idealistic young school teacher who comes to teach school after the settlement has lost many of its men to coal mining accident. The women of the town hire her to teach their children, and she comes in to help educate these heartbroken children.
Because of the accident, many of the women have been left widows, and the mine is now short of workers. So when the mine hires a new crop of single men to help out, some of them are interested in these newly widowed ladies, and some courting starts to take place.
Winning a Stepson’s Heart
In one of the episodes, a miner shows romantic interest in a widow character in the show. She is open to his overtures, but worries about how her son is going to feel. And she was right. Her son resists another man, glaring at him over dinner and then asking to leave the table as soon as the meal is finished.
The episode goes on to show him striving to win the boy’s heart. What was so remarkable was that he didn’t give up, and he understood where the boy was coming from. And instead of the boy learning to love him immediately, the show goes on to show that it is a long-term process.
I have just started When Calls The Heart, and highly recommend it, especially if you like period dramas and heartfelt shows. When I saw the second marriage connection, I liked it even more, because I could relate.
