It just walks in uninvited, unexpected, and heavy.
A memory.
A missed opportunity.
A quiet moment when you realize, This isn’t the life I thought I’d be living.
A missed opportunity.
A quiet moment when you realize, This isn’t the life I thought I’d be living.
In my work as a life and business coach, I’ve seen regret show up in people at every age and stage:
- Young professionals questioning their first big decisions
- Midlife parents wondering what’s next after the kids are grown
- Seasoned professionals realizing they’ve climbed the wrong ladder
Brené Brown says it best:
"Regret is one of our most powerful emotional reminders that reflection, change, and growth are necessary."
"Regret is one of our most powerful emotional reminders that reflection, change, and growth are necessary."
But let’s be honest regret doesn’t just sting.
It can paralyze.
It can paralyze.
It can trap us in shame and try and convince us that it’s too late to change course. I’ve seen people stay in jobs, relationships, and versions of themselves they’ve long outgrown because regret froze them at the scene of the decision.
Sometimes the hardest regrets aren’t what we did, but what we didn’t do.
The job we didn’t pursue.
The truth we didn’t speak.
The dream we quietly set aside.
The truth we didn’t speak.
The dream we quietly set aside.
Still, I believe regret carries a hidden invitation: reinvention.
To those weighed down by the what-ifs:
Here’s what I want you to know.
Here’s what I want you to know.
Regret, when met with honesty and curiosity, can shift from burden to compass. It can point out where you were out of alignment, help you name what you truly value, and remind you t’s never too late to choose differently.
I’ve seen it happen and experienced it myself. I’ve walked with clients through that fog. and seen the moment someone stops replaying the past and starts rewriting the future.
So, why is it so hard to move forward?
Because your brain isn’t wired for growth it’s wired for safety.
It wants certainty, not change. Comfort, not challenge.
It wants certainty, not change. Comfort, not challenge.
As psychologist Susan David puts it:
"Discomfort is the price of admission to a meaningful life."
"Discomfort is the price of admission to a meaningful life."
And she’s right though luckily, it’s not quite as steep as a ticket to see Beyonce or Taylor Swift in concert.
Still, like a true Swiftie pays for the magic of the moment, those who want a meaningful life must be willing to sit with discomfort.
Because growth?
It doesn’t come from playing it safe.
It comes from facing the truths we’ve been avoiding, the choices we’ve been postponing, the emotions we’ve tried to outrun.
It doesn’t come from playing it safe.
It comes from facing the truths we’ve been avoiding, the choices we’ve been postponing, the emotions we’ve tried to outrun.
Here’s your takeaway:
If regret is knocking, don’t slam the door.
Ask it:
- What values did I compromise?
- What desire did I ignore?
- What fear held me back?
Then shift from story to action.
One small step. One brave decision.
One new boundary. One honest conversation.
One small step. One brave decision.
One new boundary. One honest conversation.
That’s where traction begins.
Reinvention doesn’t always look like a dramatic overhaul.
Sometimes, it starts quietly with a shift in priorities, a reclaimed boundary, or the courage to say:
"I want something different."
Sometimes, it starts quietly with a shift in priorities, a reclaimed boundary, or the courage to say:
"I want something different."
Regret may be a tough teacher. But it’s also a powerful one.
Let it guide you forward not drag you back.
Let it guide you forward not drag you back.

There’s a story I tell often so often, in fact, my kids could probably recite it better than I can. But it’s stayed with me because it reminds me just how much your energy, presence, and daily choices matter in both life and work.
Let me take you back.
In the beginning of my career, I was brand new in my management role, working in a network of court buildings. Each morning, I’d make my rounds and walk through a long tunnel that connected the old section of the building to the new. And every day, I passed the same tall man with a big beard. I didn’t know who he was. He could’ve been an attorney, a plaintiff, defendant, a court employee really, anyone.
But I always smiled and said hello. And he returned the greeting.
I didn’t think much of it at the time. It wasn’t a strategy. It was just how I tried to show up each day: to be kind, and acknowledge people.
A few months later, I was up for a promotion to supervise a high-volume law division. I was young, inexperienced, and many questioned whether I was ready. When I walked into the judge’s chambers for the interview, guess who was sitting behind the desk?
The man from the tunnel.
He smiled. I smiled. And in that moment, I realized: those small, daily interactions had built a relationship before I even knew I needed one.
Two Lessons That Still Guide Me
1. People feel your energy before they hear your words.
As a real estate agent and a coach, I’ve walked into client meetings completely drained and it showed. The appointment felt flat. There was no spark. Honestly, I wouldn’t have hired me either.

As a real estate agent and a coach, I’ve walked into client meetings completely drained and it showed. The appointment felt flat. There was no spark. Honestly, I wouldn’t have hired me either.
But when I show up present, energized, and rooted in service? Everything changes. People open up. They feel safe, heard, and supported. That’s when transformation begins.
2. Relationships are built when no one is watching.
Not just in the big moments, but in the everyday interactions the quick check-in, the thoughtful message, the quiet consistency. These moments are the foundation of trust and opportunity.

Whether you're reinventing your career, launching something new, or navigating a personal turning point your presence and energy matter.
People don’t just hire your skills or buy your product.
They’re drawn to your mindset, your character, and how you make them feel.
Your energy is your brand.
Your consistency is your credibility.
Your consistency is your credibility.
What energy are you bringing into your days?

Let’s uncover what’s possible and create a plan to get you moving.
Let’s uncover what’s possible and create a plan to get you moving.

“You just need to take the first step.”
Sounds simple, right?
But in real life, that step is rarely the beginning.
Because the first step is never the first step.
It’s just the first one other people can see.
Because the first step is never the first step.
It’s just the first one other people can see.
What We Call “Stuck” Might Be Preparation
If you’ve been sitting in that space between knowing and doing, wondering why it feels so hard to move you’re not alone.
And you’re not behind.
And you’re not behind.
What feels like “nothing” may be the most important part of your growth.
I work with smart, capable people who find themselves in transition.
They’ve invested years in a career, a business, or a role that once fit until it didn’t.
They feel something stirring… but they hesitate.
They’ve invested years in a career, a business, or a role that once fit until it didn’t.
They feel something stirring… but they hesitate.
They haven’t “stepped forward” yet and they beat themselves up for it.
But what they often don’t see is that they’ve already been moving all along:
But what they often don’t see is that they’ve already been moving all along:
- Letting go of an old identity
- Imagining what could come next
- Battling fear, doubt, and resistance
That internal work doesn’t always look like action but it is.
So yes, the first step is never the first step.
And when that visible action finally comes, it’s never just one step.
It carries the weight of everything that came before.
And when that visible action finally comes, it’s never just one step.
It carries the weight of everything that came before.
What looks like resistance is often quiet recalibration.
The Role of Inertia
Remember Newton’s First Law from physics class?
A body at rest stays at rest, and a body in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.
A body at rest stays at rest, and a body in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.
That principle doesn’t just apply to physics it applies to us.
To our habits, routines, careers, and identities.
When you’ve been still for a while, it can feel incredibly hard to get started.
And when you’ve been moving in one direction for years, it can feel just as hard to stop, shift, or change course.
And when you’ve been moving in one direction for years, it can feel just as hard to stop, shift, or change course.
In life, we often call this being stuck.
But sometimes, inertia is wisdom.
But sometimes, inertia is wisdom.
It’s a pause.
It’s recalibration.
It’s your body and mind catching up to what your heart already knows.
It’s recalibration.
It’s your body and mind catching up to what your heart already knows.
The hardest decisions leaving a career, pivoting a business, embracing reinvention at any age aren’t delayed by laziness.
They’re delayed by meaning.
They’re delayed by meaning.
We don’t stay because we’re unmotivated.
We stay because we’ve invested so much.
We stay because we’ve invested so much.
We tell ourselves, “I’ve come too far to quit now.”
But that’s the sunk cost fallacy the belief that the time, energy, or identity we’ve invested means we have to keep going...
But that’s the sunk cost fallacy the belief that the time, energy, or identity we’ve invested means we have to keep going...
Even when our gut knows it’s time to change.
You’re Not Starting Over You’re Starting From Experience
If you’re in that “not quite moving” phase, give yourself credit.
What may look like a delay is actually part of the process.
What may look like a delay is actually part of the process.
Reinvention begins long before it becomes visible.
So when you finally take that first outward step, remember:
- It’s not the beginning.
- It’s not just one step.
- It’s the continuation of every quiet, brave moment that got you there.
