I was in that 65% that found money significantly stressful.
Money used to be a constant source of stress for me, and not just when I didn't have enough. Even when I had plenty, I had this belief that financial freedom meant the freedom to ignore my finances. Of course, that just resulted in too many late fees!
It was a completely different way of budgeting and thinking about my money. It took me a few tries to get started, but eventually I did and it changed my life.
I quickly recognized that what was causing the most stress was what I didn’t know and wasn't tracking with my money. As soon as I embraced YNAB’s methodology and starting using the app and tracking my money, so much of my financial stress was relieved.
- I knew when bills were due, and how I was going to pay them, even if it was by credit card during the lean times.
- I saved for those surprise expenses, that really shouldn’t have been a surprise (I’m looking at you every six-months car insurance bills!).
- I paid off debt.
- I built savings for those things that you hope don’t happen, but often do, like replacing a stolen bicycle, fixing your car’s alternator, or getting a bigger than expected tax bill.
- I was able to set aside a bit of fun money that I could spend on anything I wanted, without guilt, even when there wasn't much to go around.
Now, I look forward to the few minutes I spend on YNAB each morning. I have savings for every possible expense I can think of, and a rainy day fund for the things I didn’t. It helped me change my mindset about money.
And most importantly, I’ve joined the 35% of folks who don’t consider money to be a source of stress.
